MORE FILING TIME. A CLEAR NEXT STEP.

Individual Tax Extensions & Extended Returns

EJP Tax & Advisory helps individuals request filing extensions and complete extended returns. A standard extension provides more time to file, not more time to pay. If your return is not ready, address the extension, estimated amount due, and remaining records before the applicable deadline.

An extension needs a plan behind it.

You may be waiting for a document, sorting through an unfamiliar income source, or changing preparers. The practical question is what must happen now and what is still needed to finish.

Extension help should account for both stages. Requesting more filing time is one task. Preparing the complete return is another. Agree on responsibility for each rather than assuming the second follows automatically.

Filing and paying are separate responsibilities.

The ordinary federal individual filing extension can provide six additional months to file, generally to October 15 for calendar-year filers. It must be requested by the original filing due date. Unpaid tax is still due by the original payment deadline unless separate relief applies. See IRS Topic 304.

The usual spring date is April 15, but weekends, legal holidays, and applicable relief can affect the timetable. Check the deadline for the specific tax year and taxpayer, not a generic countdown.

What about the North Carolina return?

North Carolina recognizes an automatic federal filing extension for the corresponding state return when the taxpayer certifies that federal extension on the North Carolina return. If no automatic federal extension is granted, a state extension generally requires Form D-410 by the original due date.

The state filing extension does not extend the payment deadline. Federal disaster postponements are not the same as this automatic-extension process. Check the North Carolina Department of Revenue extension guidance for the rules that apply to your situation.

What to have ready for an extension conversation.

Tell us which tax year is involved and what has prevented completion. You do not need to send sensitive documents through the inquiry form.

  • A list of the income documents and other records still outstanding.
  • The previous return and current information available for estimating the year's result.
  • Records of withholding and estimated payments already made.
  • Any extension confirmations or payment confirmations if you have already acted.

After the extension, finish the return.

Keep a running list of missing items. When the last document arrives, it still needs to be reviewed in the context of the return. Avoid leaving the completion conversation until the extended deadline is close.

Our individual tax return service also covers preparation after an extension. Confirm the work and timing with us before assuming a filing commitment has been made.

An inquiry does not file an extension.

Submitting a website form, leaving a message, or asking about availability does not submit an extension to a tax agency. You need an accepted engagement and confirmation of who is handling the filing.

If a deadline is immediate, use official guidance as well as contacting a preparer. The IRS extension page explains available filing methods.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions you may have.

Can you help with both the extension and the return afterward?

Yes. We offer individual extension help and extended-return preparation. The scope and timing of each part should be agreed before work begins.

Do I get more time to pay when I extend?

Not under a standard filing extension. The extension concerns filing the return. The payment deadline stays separate unless applicable relief changes it.

Do I always need a separate North Carolina extension form?

Not always. North Carolina has a process for recognizing an automatic federal filing extension, with certification on the state return. The state requirements and any applicable relief must still be checked.

What if I already filed an extension myself?

Tell us and retain the confirmation. Extended-return preparation can be discussed separately, along with records of any payments you already made.

Can the website form be used to request an emergency filing?

No. A consultation inquiry is not a filing authorization, an accepted engagement, or confirmation that an extension has been submitted. Do not rely on it to meet a deadline.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Need help with an extension or an extended return?

Start by identifying the tax year, the outstanding records, and the work you need. Keep sensitive details out of the website inquiry.
