One town, three counties.
The Town of Cary reaches into Wake, Chatham, and Durham counties. According to the Town of Cary, each county handles assessment, valuation, billing, and collection of property taxes for the part of Cary inside its borders.
Two neighbors in Cary can receive property tax bills from different counties. When you gather records for your return, use the bill for your own property rather than a figure from a listing or a neighborhood conversation.
Bring the records that match your situation.
If you own your home, keep the county property tax bill and your payment record. If your lender pays the bill from an escrow account, your year-end mortgage statement may show the amount paid. The IRS explains which taxes can be deducted, subject to limitations, in IRS Topic 503.
The tax preparation checklist helps you organize income forms, last year's return, and anything that is still missing.
Working for yourself from a Cary address?
Self-employment can put two separate tasks at the start of the year. One is organizing income and expense records for your individual return. The other is the county business personal property listing, which under North Carolina law generally runs from the first business day of January through January 31.
Our article on business property listing in January explains why the two belong on different checklists, and which county to ask when your Cary property is outside Wake County.
Planning questions often follow a change.
A move between neighborhoods, a new employer, or added consulting income can raise questions about withholding and estimated payments. Bring those to a year-round tax advisory conversation rather than waiting for next spring.
Check your county's January listing rules.
Pick the county that bills your property to see what it asks you to list each January, when listing closes, and where to ask questions. The check opens on Wake County; switch it if a different county bills your property.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions you may have.
Which county handles property taxes for my Cary home?
It depends on where the property sits. The Town of Cary says Wake, Chatham, and Durham counties each handle assessment, billing, and collection for the part of Cary inside that county. Your bill shows which county sent it.
Do you prepare returns for self-employed Cary residents?
Yes. Individual returns with self-employment income are part of the practice. Tell us how the work is organized and whether a separate business return or bookkeeper is involved.
Do I need to live in Fuquay-Varina to work with you?
No. EJP Tax & Advisory works with clients in Fuquay-Varina and across Wake County and surrounding counties, including Cary.
