Your vehicle tax is paid with your registration.
North Carolina collects vehicle property tax through Tag & Tax Together. NCDMV bills the annual registration fee and the vehicle property tax as one notice, and you pay both when you renew. The county values the vehicle, so the tax can change from year to year even when the registration fee stays the same.
That renewal receipt can matter at tax time. The IRS treats a personal property tax as deductible when it is based only on value and charged yearly, and it is claimed as an itemized deduction under Topic 503. Keep the receipt with your real estate tax bill so the value-based tax can be separated from the flat registration fee.
Self-employed in Garner? The fourth estimated payment is due in January.
For 2026 income, the IRS lists the fourth estimated tax payment as due January 15, 2027. Its 2026 Form 1040-ES also notes that you can skip that payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027, and pay the full balance with it.
If you pay quarterly, keep the date and amount of each payment for the return. The self-employed records checklist lists what else to gather.
Business equipment in Garner is listed with Wake County.
Wake County requires a business listing from owners who hold tangible personal property or leasehold improvements used in a business on January 1, and the listing is due January 31, the end of the regular listing period under North Carolina law. That listing is a county property tax filing, separate from your income tax return.
Our article on business property listing in January explains how the two filings differ.
Planning questions during the year.
A change in work, a new business, or a retirement decision can be reviewed before it shows up on a return. Year-round tax advisory is a separate service from preparing the return, and business consulting and tax planning covers decisions for owners.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions you may have.
Do you work with Garner residents?
Yes. Garner is a Wake County municipality, and the practice works with clients across Wake County and surrounding counties.
Is vehicle property tax deductible?
It can be if you itemize. The IRS allows a deduction for personal property tax that is based only on value and charged yearly. A flat registration fee does not meet that test.
When is the January estimated payment due for 2026 income?
January 15, 2027, according to the IRS 2026 Form 1040-ES. You can skip it if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027, and pay the full balance with it.
