Start with the return, not the zip code.
Most conversations begin with one of three needs: a personal return prepared during filing season, help when a return will not be ready by the deadline, or a planning question that does not fit on a form. Individual tax return preparation is a core service, not a sideline.
You do not need a business, a particular job title, or an ongoing engagement to ask about a personal return. A new job, a move across town, or a first year of side income are ordinary reasons to reach out.
Raleigh crosses a county line.
Wake County lists Raleigh among its twelve municipalities, and the City of Raleigh also appears on Durham County's current tax rate table. The county that values your home and sends your property tax bill depends on where the property sits, not on the city name alone.
For your income tax return, the practical point is simple. If you plan to discuss itemized deductions, bring the property tax records from the county that actually billed you, along with proof of payment.
Property tax records can belong in your preparation folder.
The IRS allows an itemized deduction, subject to limitations, for state and local real property taxes and for personal property taxes based only on value, such as the value-based tax on a car. See IRS Topic 503 for the federal rules.
Whether itemizing helps depends on the rest of your return, so bring the records and let the preparation review answer that question. Our guide to which county sends your property tax bill covers the towns around Raleigh that also cross county lines.
The state's Raleigh service center moved.
The North Carolina Department of Revenue lists its Raleigh service center at 2920 Highwoods Blvd., Suite 300. The department accepts walk-ins on weekdays and recommends appointments. Confirm current hours on its office locations page before you go.
If you received a notice from the department, mention the type of notice in your inquiry and keep the notice itself out of the website form. Our guide to state and IRS tax offices explains which questions belong with an agency.
Running short on time before the deadline?
A missing document is a reason to plan, not to guess. An extension to file is not an extension to pay, so the payment question still needs an answer by the original deadline. Read about extension help and extended returns while there is time to act.
Questions about a job change, retirement income, or new self-employment income can move to year-round tax advisory once the return is filed.
Check your county's January listing rules.
Pick the county that bills your property to see what it asks you to list each January, when listing closes, and where to ask questions. The check opens on Wake County; switch it if a different county bills your property.
