One Wake County bill covers town and county property taxes.
According to the Town of Holly Springs, real estate and personal property taxes are paid to Wake County, and the Wake County bill includes both county and town taxes.
That makes the Wake County bill the property tax record to keep with your return documents if you plan to discuss itemized deductions. IRS Topic 503 explains which taxes may be deducted, subject to limitations.
What to gather before filing season.
A short list gets the conversation started. Add to it as forms arrive.
- Income forms from employers, financial institutions, retirement providers, and other payers.
- Last year's federal and North Carolina returns.
- Your Wake County property tax bill and proof of payment, if you own property.
- A short note about changes in your household, work, or income.
- Records of estimated tax payments, if you made any.
The full appointment checklist covers each group in more detail.
A planning question can come before the return.
A new job, a retirement decision, or a first year of side income is easier to discuss before the year ends. Year-round tax advisory is separate from preparation, and you can ask for either one.
When a return will not be ready.
A standard extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay. Read about extension help and extended returns before the deadline approaches.
Check your county's January listing rules.
Pick the county that bills your property to see what it asks you to list each January, when listing closes, and where to ask questions. The check opens on Wake County; switch it if a different county bills your property.
