The Harnett County Tax Department is in Lillington.

Harnett County lists Lillington among its five municipalities and describes the town as the county seat. The county Tax Department is on W. Cornelius Harnett Boulevard in Lillington, and questions about a property value or a bill go there.

Questions about how a property tax payment is treated on your federal or North Carolina return are a separate matter. Keep each paid bill with your return records so the amount and the year it was paid are easy to confirm.

Harnett County listing covers more than business equipment.

Harnett County asks owners to list individual personal property such as watercraft, aircraft, unregistered motor vehicles, and mobile homes, along with business personal property such as machinery, equipment, furniture, and computers. Listing opens January 1 and is due January 31, moving to the first working day of February when January 31 falls on a weekend, as it does in 2027. The county applies a 10% penalty to late listings.

A listing is a county property tax filing, not part of your income tax return. Our article on business property listing in January explains how the two differ.

A federal extension can cover your North Carolina return.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue accepts an automatic federal extension for the state return, but only if you certify on the North Carolina return that the extension was granted. Without a federal extension, Form D-410 is due by the original deadline. Either way, the extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay.

Our page on extension help and extended returns covers the filing and payment distinction in more detail.

Questions that come up between returns.

A new business, a change in work, or a large purchase can raise questions long before April. Year-round tax advisory is a separate service from preparing the return, and owners can start with business tax return preparation.

Check your county's January listing rules.

Pick the county that bills your property to see what it asks you to list each January, when listing closes, and where to ask questions. The check opens on Harnett County; switch it if a different county bills your property.
